What Is the Most Important Thing for Your Family During the Recruiting Process?

April 22, 2026 · Coach Deane

I've been helping players get recruited for over 20 years. The most important question your family needs to answer is not about exposure, events, or platforms — it's about who is truly advocating for your child.

The quiet truth nobody tells you

Showcases, tournaments, recruiting services, social media — they all matter. But none of them matter as much as having one person whose only job is to fight for your athlete in rooms your athlete is not in.

That's what advocacy looks like. It's a call placed at 9pm to a head coach. It's an honest assessment of where your athlete actually stands, not where you want them to stand. It's a name dropped in a conversation that opens a door no email ever could.

What advocacy is not

  • It is not a generic "athlete profile" sent to 300 schools.
  • It is not a club coach who has 80 other families to worry about.
  • It is not a service that posts your highlight reel and walks away.

Advocacy is specific, personal, and earned through relationships. Ask anyone selling you something during this process one question: Who, by name, are you going to call on my behalf this week? The answer tells you everything.

What to do about it

When you evaluate any partner in your recruiting journey — including us — start there. Find the people who actually pick up the phone, who remember your athlete's name, who tell you the truth even when it's hard.

That's the partner you want in your corner.
